Firearm Markings (2 hours)
Students will learn to identify and understand firearm markings – a necessity for properly identifying them. We will cover the markings required by law for US manufacturers and legal importers. Serial numbers, trademarks, proof marks foreign markings, and marking variances, as well as discussing why some firearms don’t have serial numbers. This workshop will help crime scene investigators, evidence technicians and forensic scientists understand and interpret firearm markings to allow proper identification incorporate a hands-on examination of firearms. No loaded firearms or live ammunition will be allowed in the classroom.
Instructor:
Don Ledbetter retired from the Seattle Police Department as a detective after 32 years. He was one of the original members of SPD’s Crime Scene Investigation Unit and conducted much of the training for the unit. He is currently employed as an instructor for the International Firearms Specialist Academy. During his time at SPD he served on the Board of Directors of the PNWD-IAI. He also served on the IAI Crime Scene Certification Board, both as a member, and later Chair of that Board. Detective Ledbetter is an IAI Certified Senior Crime Scene Analyst (CSCSA). He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines.
